Busy day today, both buying and selling work. First a visit to the SWA show in Sidmouth, as we were nearby, where I was delighted to see my Onion Study above this gorgeous painting by @dbirdseyart. We loved it so much we bought it! After a long day we just made it to St Ives in time to pop in to the PV at Penwith Gallery Associates Show. I was a bit worried initially as I couldn’t see my work, so thought perhaps it hadn’t made the final hang, only for John to find the sticker and red dot. Thank you @penwithgallery and the buyer, I’m delighted it’s found a new home.

Very pleased and a bit excited as this painting has been selected for the South West Academy Fine and Applied Arts open exhibition at Kennaway House, Sidmouth Devon. The exhibition is on from the 28th October until the 8th of November.

Today I’ve felt very grateful for the type of professional training I received with Ray Tovey and the team on his graphic design course at what was once Camborne College of Further and Higher Education, (Camborne Tech) now @cornwallcollege. Having cocked up the window sizes of two mounts ordered from Bramptons, I’ve had no choice but to cut my own. No bevelled edges I’m afraid but no crosses in the corners either. Result! If you would like to see the rest of the work, professionally mounted, please do come and see us @polyfalmouth next week. If you had the privilege to be taught by Ray or John even better.

Spent sometime at The National Portrait Gallery this morning, seeing the Jenny Saville exhibition. Well worth a visit to get an understanding of the scale of her work and technique. Always love spending time here so had an hour on floor 2 looking at pre WW2 work as well.

So it has been ‘all about the bass’ this week. (Sorry for the pun). This is the first of a series of paintings of this beautiful fish sometimes referred to as sea bass much to my husband’s annoyance. Just bass will do!

Whilst I catch up with some of the various @journalingwithnature prompts for #inktober2024 here are some palm leaves from my recent trip to Marbella. I think it’s a Traveler’s-Palm according to the plant identifying app. I sat painting this in our hotel garden until quite dark as it was our last evening there. I think the other guests must of thought I was a bit odd, as they passed by, but I had seen these splendid plants over several days and just wanted to record one of them. Feels warm and sunny just looking at those luscious leaves!

Day 17 Root and Day 19 Companion

Still desperately trying to catch up the great prompts from @journalingwithnature, so another double post. If I’d popped a worm in the robin’s mouth I could have covered Day 18 ‘invertebrate’ too! But I didn’t think of that till I was about to post 🤦‍♀️😂.

These sweet baby carrots came from @kehelland.trust shop yesterday. I’ve used a fountain pen with watercolours, rather than a fine liner, as you get a softer uneven line.

We are very lucky to have so many birds in our garden. I painted the robin a while ago but love his quirky stance, so it’s nice he’s had his day on instagram too.

These plants and flowers grew in and around the gardens of our hotel @eurostarshotels Marbella, so I’m guessing are ‘cultivated’. As for ‘shade’ I’ve been working on how I use shadows in my sketches and paintings. I’ve been inspired by other people’s use such as @jude__c_ and with advise from @shoreditchsketcher on a recent workshop, I felt it was something I’d rather overlooked. So shadow rather than shade but the two are related. More to come!

Yep I’m all out of sync. I managed to do quite a bit of sketchbook work on holiday which I intended to share on return but life got in the way (work, poorly mother etc.) so just catching up! This plant is called Pink Trumpetvine and grew up a wall close to our hotel in Marbella. I’ve been working in a small sketchbook with hot pressed watercolour paper but opened up it’s long and thin so not easy to show the whole image on IG although great to use. So i’m playing around with different options such as coloured backgrounds. More to come as I catch up with posting!

Yep I’m all out of sync. I managed to do quite a bit of sketchbook work on holiday which I intended to share on return but life got in the way (work, poorly mother etc.) so just catching up! This plant is called Pink Trumpetvine and grew up a wall close to our hotel in Marbella. I’ve been working in a small sketchbook with hot pressed watercolour paper but opened up it’s long and thin so not easy to show the whole image on IG although great to use. I sat in the hotel garden and painted the hibiscus flower and Queensland umbrella tree yesterday afternoon. All plants need water, so nailed this one 😂 Lots of lovely plants so should be able to add some more in the next few days. Wondering if any of them might survive our wet winter, as I’m planning on creating a bed at home with succulents and exotic plants.

It’s pretty typical that I’m already behind on the #inktober challenge. Although, to be fair I was on a drawing workshop yesterday and I’d a painting I had to finish today. So here is a pen and watercolour sketch of brambles found just up the road and which still retain some fruit. I’m trying out a range of techniques and this one was painting first, with pen applied after the water colour.

These poppy heads make such wonderful subject matter. @kehelland.trust they are dried and can be bought from our shops to use in arrangements. They look amazing sprayed white or gold but I like them natural and even better when they age. Yes, it’s getting cold and wet but nature also gives us these wonderful seed heads at this time of year and so much more to enjoy.

Day 3 #inktober Scented

It’s getting quite late in the season for fragrant garden flowers but I found this beautiful bloom in the front garden. It’s a @david_austin_roses called Young Lycidas which is incredibly fragrant, my favourite for both scent and colour. This is just a quick pen and watercolour sketch so doesn’t do it justice but it was interesting experimenting with waterproof ink for a change. This could be so much more beautiful in oil paints.

So Friday I spent a fab day out sketching in the sunshine with @shoreditchsketcher organised by @cornishcraftbarn. Always amazed by Phil Dean’s work and his ability to capture a sense of place so it was a pleasure to see his work and he also shared some great tips for sketching outside. This was the better of the two I did. Whilst I intend to incorporate a bit more pen work in future I do love pencil and watercolour. The venue was great and it was all very well organised plus so nice to meet lots of new artists too.

Proud mum moment. Our son @jameslay_artist currently studying fine art at uni, sold his first piece of work @polyfalmouth Members Show tonight. He’s had lots of support and encouragement from family and friends and is over the moon. A real confidence boost. We all love those red dots!

First post here in a while as mostly busy with my residency. However, I’ve been lucky enough to join a small group of friends for life drawing sessions so thought I’d share what I’m doing. This small painted sketch is the first I’ve done in quite sometime. The slightly foreshortened pose proved tricky and I’m experimenting with different surfaces too. But overall I like the way most the paint sits on the brown and there are passages that are more successful. As usual @stephens.suzi is the most incredible model and the group are so nice it’s all rather a pleasure to be a part of.

Beautifully curated as always by the amazing staff at the Poly. Finished off the evening with a scrummy meal out @wilder_kitchen. The final full day of our trip was spent first at the Van Gogh Museum and later at the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art. Of course when in Amsterdam the Van Gogh is an obvious choice but for me the ‘contextual’ work of artists like Degas and Redon really added to the visit. The Stedelijk which holds the Dutch collection (including De Stijl) from 1880 to the present day is a bit muddled and hard to navigate with signage non existent at times!. However, there are some gems there and it’s worth visiting. The installations by Chiharu Shioto and Yayoi Kusama were a high point.

Travelled to Assen, to what seems a relatively obscure town but with a wonderful modern gallery. Very exciting as this was our reason for coming to Holland. Drents museum is showing a major retrospective of Antonio Lopez Garcia’s work. Fortunately the gallery was quiet so gave us the opportunity to sit with the work or walk up and observe his methods application etc. The staff were lovely too. What an absolute joy. So glad we made the effort to come and if you are interested in visiting it’s on until June. Did try to post another picture but IG don’t like nudity. Do look up his work, I’d be happy to argue he’s our greatest living artist. Even travelled on a double decker train both ways!

Small portrait of my son’s girlfriend done for his birthday earlier in the week. First all prima oil portrait I’ve done independently. (I.e not with a tutor). At times it was a struggle; lack of experience meant some of my choices made it harder than it should of but I like some bits of it and I’m learning all the time. It also looks vaguely like her although she’s prettier in the flesh!

So, as I continue with my catching up these little paintings were from a fab 2 day course I did with @e.crow.studio at @stivespainting before Christmas. Eleanor was so encouraging and generous, it was a lovely couple of days. Did hope to do a bit more on them, maybe in a few weeks although like most people it often doesn’t happen despite the best intentions. My final piece is quite different, so i’ll post that separately. Learnt a lot just need to put it into practice. X
